In the early 1970’s Cat Stevens, whose name has changed to Yusef but whose voice has somehow never changed – a beautifully creepy feat that leaves me wondering if he was ever real in the first place – was flying in an airplane.  In one hand he held a Buddha and in the other hand a box of chocolate.  And he pondered, or so the story goes, if the plane went down, the last things he’d hold would be the spiritual and the material.  Now I assume that it was the box of chocolates he found so spiritual, and the little statue represented the material world, but no matter.  What matters is in the end, the tug between the material and the spiritual led him to create yet another poetic and memorable collection of songs he titled Buddha and The Chocolate Box.

And so it is in my world this morning when I sat down to avoid the day and realized I’d eaten the last piece of chocolate that the spiritual tug of the void and the material tug of temptation had their way with me.  It was a golden rose I’d eaten at the end of the evening last night, and what a delicate and tasty way to end the day it was.
